Butterfly Project: "Homesick"

"Homesick" by Anonymous

I've lived in the ghetto here for more than a
   year,
In Terezin, in the black town now,
And when I remember my old home so dear,
I can love it more than I did, somehow.

Ah, home, home,
Why did they tear me away?
Here the weak die easy as a feather
And when they die, they die forever.

I'd like to go back home again,
It makes me think of sweet spring flowers.
Before, when I used to live at home,
It never seemed so dear and fair.

I remember now those golden days...
But maybe I'll be going there soon again.

People walk along the street,
You see at once on each you met
That there's ghetto here,
A place of evil and of fear.
There's little to eat and much to want,
Where bit by bit, it's horror to live.
But no one must give up!
The world turns and times change.

Yet we all hope the time will come
When we'll go home again.
Now I know how dear it is
And often I remember it.

I commented on Andrew R's, Jackson's, Jack's, Hazelle's, and Luis's butterflies

  1. Nice butterfly Angel. Its easy to know which side is home and which is terezin with the house and nazi sign at the top. I like that you put a quote next to some of the drawing to show why. I think the drawings on the left side look a little too together.

    1. Thanks! You're right about the crowded drawings. I could've done what you did and use space from the right wing.

  2. I really like the butterfly in all. The Tags are detailed and explain the contents of the butterfly and poem. I also just really like the symbolism demonstrated in the butterfly. How one side represents the freedom of the outside, the other side represents the sturggles of Terezin. Overall I think that the butterfly was really well done.

  3. Nice job on your butterfly. I liked hwo you made the butterfly's antennae hold pictures of places of fear and the place of love and longing. The meters helped explained the author's tone, as you drew them on both sides. The images you drew really represented the lines in the poem. Your tag explanations really helped me comprehend the poem; the tone, messages, theme, fears, dreams, and hopes. Your explanation concerning the colored paper represents was really thorough.
Some recommendations I have are to check the tags for grammatical errors. I also noticed that you didn't add any additional sources.
    Otherwise, your butterfly looks great!

  4. Great job on your butterfly Angel. I like how you drew everything out. Your drawing went really well with your expantations. Especially the drawing in the top left corner where it showed meaning. It showed how people that were larger and had power got more needs including food and clothing. I also thought it was a creative idea to put symbols that represented and showed which side was which on the top of the butterfly, home and the camp, it also looked and reminded me of butterfly antennas. The flag represented the concentration camp along with the people's suffering while the house represented there home where they felt safe. I only recommend double reading and checking spelling errors other than that great job on your butterfly.

  5. Nice job with the butterfly! As stated above, it does get a bit crowded, but in all I enjoyed the idea of one side representing the fears of Terezin and all the bad things, and the other side representing the sweetness and great things coming from the poet's home. Your tags were detailed and you did a good job of explaining each claim you made. Good work!

  6. Hey Angel. Your butterfly represented your poem greatly with your choice to have a "Terezin side" and a "Nazi side". I do however agree with Andrew that your drawings are crowded and slightly difficult to tell what they are. What I really liked though was the antennas on the butterfly, and how you had a house on one side. Then a Swastika on the other. It again does a great job showing the two different lives that the author lived. Although your symbols and drawings are a little sloppy, the way you described them to the audience showed me that they are really good in representing your poem. Which is great, as it was the goal of this project. Nice job.

  7. Angel, your butterfly looks very well done. The initial thing that I liked about it was the “work sets you free” sign along with the house on top, because it shows two different sides of the author’s life. Another thing that stood out was the meters you drew, showing the author’s feelings. This was a good, simple way to show how much the author missed his old life. Lastly, I like how you included a bystander on your butterfly, because the citizens are a part of the holocaust that aren't talked about that much and it was cool how you chose to include that. Nice work!

  8. Nice job making your butterfly Angel. I like how you made one side your butterfly for what the person had seen in the concentration camp while the other side is how the person remembers his house and how he misses it dearly. The quotes you placed near the drawings made it more understandable as it shows what your person witnessed. Good work!

  9. You did a good job representing how the people in the ghetto have so little, and how they wish for much more. You also used creative materials that nobody else even thought of using. I also liked how you had two sides, the home side, and Terezin side, which were clearly labeled at the top. There were a few problems with the butterfly though. The quotes are kind of hard to read, since they are written in pencil. Some of your tags were overlapping with each other. For example, you said one of the author's fears was that none of the Jews survive, and one of his hopes is that they do survive. Other than that, I liked your butterfly a lot.
